Product Description

Hydrogen Bromide is Colourless, toxic and corrosive, incombustible gas with a pungent smell, very irritating to the mucous membranes. Forms white fumes with moist air. Hydrogen bromide is very readily soluble in water (at 273 K (0 °C) about 600 l of hydrogen bromide in 1 l of water).
The gas must be dry when filled into steel cylinders, i.e. the dewpoint of the gas being packed must be below 263 K (10 °C). Usually manufactured from hydrogen and bromine, which react together in the
gaseous state at moderate temperature in the presence of noble metal catalysts. Hydrogen bromide can also be liberated from potassium bromide by approx. 25% sulphuric acid and is formed as a byproduct in the bromination of organic substances such as tetralin and in the preparation of bromobenzene and bromoacetone.

Use: Hydrogen bromide is used to prepare inorganic and organic bromides, as a reducing agent and catalyst in many organic processes and to cleave off protective groups, the hydrogen bromide often being used in solution in glacial acetic acid (33% solution).
